THERE IS A BEAUTIFUL, BALANCED EXCHANGE BETWEEN GREEN PLANTS, ALGAE, BACTERIA, AND ANIMALS. THIS GIVE AND TAKE OF OXYGEN AND CARBON DIOXIDE IS ESSENTIAL FOR LIFE.

What’s going on up there
DIFFERENT SHAPES OF LEAVES ARE CAREFULLY ADAPTED TO THE PLANT’S ENVIRONMENT TO CONSERVE THE MOST ENERGY WHILE MAXIMIZING SUNLIGHT COLLECTION.
DARKER LEAVES ABSORB MORE LIGHT ENERGY WHILE
LIGHTER LEAVES REFLECT EXCESS LIGHT TO AVOID OVERHEATING.
ROUGH-SURFACED LEAVES HAVE MORE SURFACE AREA THAN THEIR SMOOTH COUNTERPARTS, ALLOWING MORE WATER TO EVAPORATE AND HELPING TO COOL THE TREE.
BROAD LEAVES AT THE TOPS OF TREES ARE SMALLER, LIGHTER IN COLOR, AND MORE LOBED (WAVY AROUND THE EDGES), PROVIDING AMPLE HEAT DISPERSAL AND ALLOWING LIGHT TO REACH THE LOWER, LARGER, LESS-LOBED LEAVES. LOBES DISPERSE HEAT BY PROVIDING MORE POINTS OF EVAPORATION (ALSO KNOWN AS EVAPOTRANSPIRATION).
NEEDLES HAVE LESS SURFACE AREA AND DARKER COLORATION THAN BROAD LEAVES, BUT BY BEING EVERGREEN (YEAR-ROUND), THE TREES SAVE ENERGY IN THE LONG RUN BY AVOIDING THE ENERGY-HEAVY PROCESS OF REGROWING ALL LEAVES YEARLY.
